For those consumers who hate having a giant black screen cluttering their living room, there’s a radical new TV arriving later this year.
LG has just revealed its next-generation OLED television which has a very clever trick up its sleeve as it can be rolled up and magically disappear.
LG first announced this concept last year but now Korean firm has revealed the world’s very first official rollable OLED TV which is expected to arrive in stores this spring.
When unrolled users will be treated to a 65-inch screen which LG is boasting will offer incredible contrast and picture quality.
Then, when you are finished your evening’s viewing, the screen simply rolls into its base which also acts as a speaker.
In fact, even when the TV is hidden away users can enjoy music and other audio content which emanate from this 4.2-channel, 100W front-firing Dolby Atmos audio system.
LG says that its rollable OLED TV is a true game-changer, liberating users from the limitations of the wall and freeing them to curate their own personal space which no longer needs to be reserved full time for TV viewing.
Along with looking and sounding good LG is also making all its new TVs even smarter via improved voice control.
Users can use their voice to get things done with Amazon Alexa plus there’s a new addition to LG’s AI TV lineup in 2019, as is support for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.
With support for AirPlay 2, users can easily play videos from iTunes and other video apps, music, photos and directly from their Apple devices to their LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R. With Apple HomeKit support, customers will be able to control their LG TV using the Home app or by asking Siri.
There’s currently no word on price or release date but don’t expect any bargains as this new TV could cost in excess of £8,000.
The news of LG’s latest TV comes as Samsung has also revealed it’s next generation of tellies which feature a technology called Micro LED.
The Korean firm says the revolutionary new Micro LED technology features leading-edge self-emissive technology and modular capabilities which will help Micro LED displays deliver unparalleled picture quality, versatility and design.
Speaking about today’s TV announcements, Anne Eaglesfield, Head of Consumer Electronics at Argos, said: “8K is making waves at this year’s CES with LG launching its own 88” 8K OLED TV model.
“While 8K is the TV guru’s dream, the lack of compatible content currently available means the technology won’t reach mass adoption for a good few years.
“As a result, we predict demand for 4K TVs will continue to rise this year.
“Demand for bigger screen sizes is also continuing to rise. Last year sales of jumbo TVs (65” or more) soared by 139 per cent year-on-year as customers looked to create cinematic experiences at home. With larger screens proving so popular, the 88” 8K TV will certainly blow TV fans away.
“We’re excited to see that the rumours were true about the world’s first rollable TV, LG’s Signature R OLED, going on sale this year, which will offer viewers a more flexible viewing experience. As well as offering amazing picture quality, it rolls up out of its base, which allows users to have more control over the space their TV takes up.”
