Google Maps is the American tech giant’s navigation software that is immensely popular.

In fact, the programme has been downloaded over 5billion times on Android, according to its updated Google Play Store listing.

For each application, the Google Play Store lists how many “installs” it has.

The tally for Google Maps was recently updated to “5,000,000,000+”, reflecting its new achievement.

Google Maps is the second application to reach such a figure.

YouTube and the Google Search app have already achieved the feat.

The new accomplishment for Google Maps follows a period that saw a host of substantial upgrades for the software arrive.

Back in January, the ability to see the location of speed cameras was added to the software.

Now, when the user attempts to navigate to a route they will see cameras highlighted in yellow.

Moreover, when the trap is close, Google Maps will also issue an audio prompt alerting the user to the fact.

Google has recently embedded its Assistant in the software.

Now, users are able to use the virtual helper to perform tasks while driving, meaning user eyes can stay focused on the road.

However, one of the most important updates to arrive for Google Maps of late is the new commute tab that can show the location of live public transportation such as buses.

Additionally, the new tool can also alert Android users to delays instantly via a push notification.

Discussing the feature back in October, the Mountain View firm said: “Google Maps now features a commute tab that provides one-tap access to live traffic and transit information tailored to your commute.

“We’ll tell you if your commute is going to be a normal one or if you’ll need to budget extra time due to things like an accident or heavy traffic.

“In the case of a delay, we’ll tell you about alternative routes to help you get to work faster. On Android, you’ll also receive notifications about delays and disruptions on your route as they happen, so you can know about an incident before you get caught up in the delay.”
