Some opportunities are too good to miss. This is one of them. Airbnb are offering you the chance to live the Italian dream: learning to cook pasta, volunteer with the local community and reside in one of the most beautiful towns in the country. And guess what, all expenses are paid for. Yes, you’re basically getting paid to go on holiday.

Where?

The small village of Grottole, with only 300 inhabitants and more than 600 empty homes is at risk of disappearing and is asking for your help! Grottole is a dreamy little spot located in the Province of Matera, in the Region of Basilicata, in southern Italy. As with most old towns, Grottole was erected on top of a mountain, strategically positioned to fend off attacks, and also offering a ruddy nice view!

Who are they looking for?

Airbnb is looking for four people to head to Grottole for three months, immersing themselves in the culture in the process.

The candidates will become temporary citizens of the village, while also volunteering for a local, non-profit organisation called ‘Wonder Grottole’, which aims to revitalise the town’s historical centre. So not only will you be living a dream, you’ll also be doing some good. It’s a win, win.

Why should I apply?

Firstly, who doesn’t want to spend 3 months in Italy for free. Pizza, pasta, a gorgeous climate and the sound of Italian surrounding you wherever you go. Plus, you won’t just be sitting around idly, you’ll be there to fully immerse yourself in the culture, make pasta, and maybe host a few dinner parties with your new found chef skills, all expenses paid for of course.

What do airbnb say?

Just the right things to entice us, apparently:

“Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and become a temporary citizen of a village in the south of Italy. Immerse yourself in the local culture and discover how to speak, act and cook the Italian way.

You will also get to support the local community by hosting an Airbnb Experience. Your goal? To help the local community revitalise the small village of Grottole.”

Your typical day

Start the day with an Italian breakfast and join your local teacher for your morning Italian class.

Get your hands dirty and learn how to grow vegetables with a local expert.

Learn all the secrets of Italian cuisine and enjoy a delicious meal prepared with local produce.

Clamber aboard a classic Italian Ape Piaggio and discover Basilicata’s hidden gems.

At the end of a busy day, kick back and relax with the locals over an aperitivo.
