Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9 released last year and remain two of the best Android phones on the market.

That is because both devices have gorgeous displays, capable camera systems and have been upgraded to Android 9 Pie.

Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9 both have a dedicated button for Samsung’s virtual assistant, Bixby.

Previously this key was unable to be remapped to perform other functions.

However, with the announcement of the Galaxy S10 last month the South Korean OEM announced it was not only allowing the button’s purpose to be altered on the new handset, but all “previously released Bixby-enabled flagship smartphones running Android Pie OS”, too.

Since the news was discussed, Samsung has released an update for the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9 that allows the function of the button to be changed.

It is worth noting this upgrade is also available on the Galaxy S8 and Note 8.

In order for Samsung owners to take advantage of the new tool, they should ensure they are running the latest version of Bixby.

The virtual assistant can be updated through the Samsung Galaxy Store.

To check for updates, simply head to the “my page” tab that can be accessed from the top right-hand side of the Galaxy Store home screen.

Then press “update” to view any programmes that are in need of a new download.

Once you have obtained the newest version of Bixby, go to the settings of your Samsung phone.

From there, press advanced features > Bixby key.

Users are then prompted to choose between two different options to customise the virtual helper.

Bixby still needs to be enabled through the button, but users can map certain programmes to either a single or double press of the key.

Samsung’s software will be enabled for whichever option is not taken by the user’s preferred function.

When deciding the new purpose of the key, users can choose between opening new apps or running quick commands.

It is worth noting users are unable to summon other virtual helpers, such as the Google Assistant, from the button.

The process described above should be the same for all applicable Samsung devices.
