Best Nintendo Switch games
If you were lucky enough to receive a brand spanking new Nintendo Switch this Christmas, then you’ll be wanting some equally brilliant games to go with it.
With the Boxing Day sales about to begin, Express Online has picked out some of the very best games the Nintendo Switch has to offer.
From Super Smash Bros Ultimate to Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey to Breath of the Wild, these are the games every Nintendo Switch owner must buy.
Super Smash Bros
“The size of the roster, the number of stages, the endless Easter eggs, the cameos, the wonderful World of Light mode, the multiplayer, the list could go on.
“With the release of Super Smash Bros Ultimate on Switch, Nintendo has given itself a big problem: where exactly does the series go next?
“It’s hard to imagine anything bigger, better and more definitive that Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which well and truly lives up to its name.”
“Sonic Mania takes us back to those heady 90s days, when the blue hedgehog was king and platformers ruled the roost.
“It feels like a true successor to the 2D Sonic games of yore, and is the sequel we’ve all been waiting for since 1994’s Sonic and Knuckles.
“Sonic is well and truly back with a bang.”
Super Smash Bros Ultimate on Nintendo Switch
Super Mario Odyssey
“In a series with so many high points – Super Mario World, Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy, to name but a few – Nintendo has somehow managed to raise the bar to lofty new heights.
“Put simply, Super Mario Odyssey is a voyage every Nintendo Switch owner should take.”
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild may have been a Nintendo Switch launch title, but it’s arguably yet to be bettered. Nintendo promised to shake things up for the latest Zelda adventure, and boy did they deliver.
Taking place in a gorgeous open world with endless secrets to discover, Breath of the Wild gives players complete freedom to carve their own adventure. With some of the series’ most inventive puzzles and best boss battles, this is a truly must-have release.
Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2
“Within the first few minutes of picking up these explosive action games, you know exactly the type of experience you’re in for. A madcap mix of pitch perfect combat, over the top cutscenes and a provocative sense of humour.
“And it’s all topped off with a badass heroine who makes no apologies for whether you get offended or not.”
“Splatoon returns with new maps and weapons, a brand new wave-based survival mode called Salmon Run and the classic Turf War competition where the aim is to cover arenas with as much paint as possible.
“And there’s certainly lots to like about Splatoon 2, which apart from being more colourful and vibrant than your average shooter, is also much more unique.
“Splatoon 2 is another entertaining exclusive for the Nintendo Switch, and absolutely essential if you missed the original.”
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
“Mario Kart 8 was a stone-cold classic when it released back in 2014, and it’s even better now. The action is timeless, the visuals are dazzling and the sheer versatility of the Nintendo Switch ensures Mario Kart 8 Deluxe fulfils its potential as a multiplayer classic.
“Mario Kart 8 may have originated on the Wii U, but it was made for the Nintendo Switch and should be in everybody’s game collection.”
The first game to receive a perfect 10 from IGN in 2018, Celeste is a platforming powerhouse from the makers of the excellent Towerfall Ascension – which is also out on Switch and definitely worth a look.
Watertight platforming action combined with intuitive controls ensures that Celeste is for everyone, although only the most dedicated and skilful players will unearth all of its secrets. It also tells a surprisingly engaging story that packs an emotional punch.
Splatoon 2 on Nintendo Switch
“A few narrative missteps aside, Octopath Traveller is a wonderful game with excellent characters, evocative music, an engaging battle system and a beautiful art style.
“Octopath Traveller may owe a debt to the past, but here’s hoping it shapes the future of a genre that clearly ain’t dead yet.”
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
“Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is another brilliant Wii U exclusive that has been expertly ported over to the Nintendo Switch.
“The game sees the Mushroom Kingdom’s protector embark on an adventure to save his friend Toadette who has been kidnapped by the nefarious Wingo.
“To do that you’ll have to play through dozens of levels – each one an ingenious puzzle box that is just begging to be solved.”
A love letter to the likes of Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley is a farming role-playing game with bags of personality. Players take control of a character that moves away from the hustle and bustle of city life to work on a farm.
Once you’ve cleaned the farm up, you’ll need to grow crops, raise livestock, craft new equipment, mine for ore, battle monsters and even fall in love and settle down. It’s charming, relaxing and utterly addictive.
